LUNA DE MOL – BIOGRAPHY (2024)

At the age of 21, Luna De Mol has already performed on some of the most famous stages in the world, including Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, Het Concertgebouw, Flagey and Bennet Gordon Hall.

Starting to play the violin with Fedra Coppens, Luna entered the class of Prof. Coosje Wijzenbeek at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam at the age of 12, where she joined the international ensemble “Fancy Fiddlers”, and received a scholarship to the International Music Academy Liechtenstein. Only three years later, she was accepted to the class of David Takeno (Eugène Ysaÿe International Chair of Violin) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Here she recently finished her Bachelors degree, receiving the “Chairman’s Prize” for the highest overall marks across the school.

She is also a student of Pavlo Beznosiuk on the baroque violin and David Dolan for classical improvisation.

Luna is currently a 2023-2024 fellow at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, USA, under the artistic direction of Miriam Fried and Midori.  She was also recently in residence at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and attended IMS Prussia Cove.

Luna has been taught by masters such as Miriam Fried, Midori, Donald Weilerstein, Mark Steinberg, Rainer Schmidt, Renaud Capucon, Alasdair Tait, Gary Hoffman, and many more.

She has also performed with incredible artists including Janine Janssen, Steven Isserlis, Julian Rachlin, Boris Brovtsyn, Atar Arad, Ramón Ortega, Andreas Ottensamer, Tine Thing Helseth, Anneleen Lenaerts, … as well as Bjarte Eike & the Barokksolistenen and the Academy of Ancient Music, among others.

Luna is a founding member of the Fibonacci Quartet, described as one of the most promising string quartets of its generation. They are in residence at the ICM of the Escuela Superior De Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid with Guenter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet) and at the Dutch National String Quartet Academy. The quartet has won five international first prizes as well as multiple special prizes, and performs internationally on big stages.

As a soloist, Luna won the Dutch Violin competition and has previously been a laureate of multiple international competitions. As a result she is a part European Union of Music Competitions (EMCY) database.

Luna has performed as a soloist and a chamber musician in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, Kings Place and Conway Hall (UK) the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Flagey Studio 4 (BE), Het Koninklijk Concertgebouw, Theater Carré, Tivoli-Vredenburg (NL), the Palace of Versailles (FR).

She has performed at festivals such as the Ravinia Festival (USA), Gstaad Menuhin Festival (CH), Het Grachtenfestival Amsterdam (NL), Arte Amanti International Chamber Music Festival (BE), :alpenarte (AT), JAM on the Marsch (UK), Smetana Festival (CZ), International Chamber Music Festival The Hague (NL), International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht (NL), the Next Generation Festival and the VP Bank Classic Festival (CH), Klassiek op ‘t Amstelveld (NL), Les Musicales de Lubéron (FR), International Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog (NL), London Haendel Festival,… 

She has been broadcast on international radio and TV, including performances on “France Musique”, BBC “In Tune”, “Dutch Concert Radio”, “Podium Witteman” and “Podium Klassiek”, “Podium Extra”, “Man Bijt Hond”, “Het Journaal”,…

Overview

2006 – Starts playing the violin, aged 4

2014 – Studies at the Amsterdam University of the Art’s programme for exceptionally gifted young musicians

2014 – Joins the string ensemble ‘Fancy Fiddlers’

2018 – Wins 1st Prize at the Dutch National Violin Competition (category Davina van Wely)

2019 – Starts Bachelor studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, UK in the class of David Takeno and founds the Fibonacci Quartet

2020 – Fibonacci String Quartet win 1st prize and audience prize at the Beethoven Competition for Young Musicians in London and 1st prize at the Saint James Chamber Music competition in London.

2021 – Fibonacci String Quartet wins First Prize at the International “Triomphe de l’Art” Chamber Music Competition in Brussels.

2022 – Fibonacci String Quartet gets the Audience Prize at the International Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog

2023 – Fibonacci String Quartet wins 1st prizes in the Royal Overseas League International Competition and in the CAVATINA chamber music competition

         – receives the “Chairman’s Prize” for the highest achieved overall mark at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

         – is in summer in residence at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute and Festival in Chicago, USA and as well as an artist at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaat, CH.
